I see pictures everywhere and basically draw whatever catches my eye. Subject matter is relatively unimportant, but good composition is essential and although I generally work from photographs I still go out into the field and sketch in order to better understand the subtle nuances of color that exist in nature. The camera, on the other hand, is able to capture a moment in time and preserve it, to serve as the basic building block for a drawing or painting. I never do an exact copy, however, of the photograph but rather translate the image, bringing out a more varied contrast of light, shade and vibrant color than existed in the original photographic image.
